Household Hazardous Waste Collections

What is Household Hazardous Waste?

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is any product labeled: toxic, poison, corrosive, flammable, combustible or irritant. The health and safety of our community is endangered when these products are discarded in household garbage, sinks or storm drains. The amount of products from a single home may seem insignificant. However, when millions of homes across Los Angeles County use similar products, the combined effect becomes a major problem.

The following are examples of HHW products that may be found in and around your home:

How to Dispose of HHW Properly

For Residents:

Pack the items for safe transportation and head over to the City of Los Angeles, Permanent Collection Center. The Center is open every Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Hyperion Treatment Plant, 7660 West Imperial Hwy., Gate B, Playa Del Rey. For more information visit the City of Los Angeles, Public Works Department or call (800) 988-6942.

Los Angeles County sponsors HHW Collections Events. A Collection Event is a one -day, drive-through event where residents are invited to drive in to a specific location to drop off their hazardous waste. The El Segundo event is held each November at Raytheon Corporation, Parking Lot “G” Hughes Way off Sepulveda Blvd from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. CWS Construction and Demolition (C&D) and Inert Waste Recycling Facility. The facility is permitted and approved by CalRecycle and the California Integrated Waste Management Board. 

 Waste Materials Accepted:  Wood (all types),  Plastic (all types), Drywall, Cardboard and Paper (all types), Metals (all types), Carpet, Carpet Pad, Greenwaste, General Household, Appliances, Concrete, Stucco, Block, Brick, Asphalt, Dirt, Sand, Ceramic Tile, Gravel, and all other non-hazardous building materials.

 Waste Materials - Not Accepted: Food, Liquid and Hazardous Materials such as paint, chemicals, solvents, tires, sealed tanks or barrels, toxic, medical, asbestos, treated lumber, batteries, florescent light bulbs, etc. 

 Hours of Operation:  M-F 6:00AM to 10:00PM,  Sat. 6:00AM to 7:00PM,  Sun. 7:00AM to 2:00PM

 Location:  621 W. 152nd St., Gardena, 90247. (Directly adjacent to Redondo Beach Blvd. and the 110 Freeway)

For Businesses:

Dispose of HHW at a City of Los Angeles, S.A.F.E. Center Call the City of LA Sanitation Dept at (213) 485-2260 to make an appointment for the 3rd Wednesday of every month.
