On January 15, 2008, the City Council adopted the Environmental Action Plan and created the El Segundo Environmental Committee.
As of April 2015, the El Segundo Environmental Committee meets regularly on the third Monday of the month at 6:00pm at City Hall. The committee will address a broad range of environmental issues facing the City of El Segundo, review existing City environmental programs, and recommend new green policies and programs to the City Council. This year, the committee has also begun participating in local events to promote environmentally friendly practices within our community.
Selected past accomplishments and recognitions for El Segundo:
Began a City-wide curbside recycling collection program for residents
Our City, residents and business community worked successfully divert 84% of waste from landfills over the last decade
Designated as a national Tree CityUSA since 2002 and planted over 1,200 trees
Received an Honorable Mention form the State of California, Flex Your Power for over 50% of the water used by the City is recycled, and we effectively saved over 22,000,000 kWh of electricity over the period July 1 2007 through June 30, 2008.
City facilities have undergone significant energy retrofitting to include heating, ventilating, air conditioning (HVAC) regulators, and lighting changes. The City’s facilities energy conservation retrofitting resulted in energy savings of 10,558,433 kilowatts and savings of $2 million dollars
Use recycled water in parks in street medians
Implemented an Environmental Work Plan and established an Environmental Committee comprised of residents and business owners
Held the City’s first Environmental Expo to educate residents and business owners on sustainability
Retrofitted traffic signals citywide with LED’s resulting in first year energy savings of 378,768 Kilowatts and cost savings of $45,346 dollars.
