The Photo Archives illustrate the history of El Segundo and the immediate surrounding areas from the early 1900’s to the present day.The Archives consist of historical photographs, slides, newspaper clippings, postcards, and select images from the El Segundo High School yearbooks. The emphasis of the Archives is the City and its landscape. Specific topics include:
A pictorial history of Standard Oil in El Segundo (currently Chevron USA, Inc.); the beach areas; downtown historic buildings and streets; City Hall plaza; other City Department buildings, employees, and events; Los Angeles Airport; residential streets and private homes; local businesses; residents, visitors, and much more.
The Photo Archives have been a separate collection since the early foundation of the public library in 1916. Over the years, donations have been given to the Library from both public and private collections. For the past ten years, the Archives has been organized and maintained by the Friends of the El Segundo Public Library, a non-profit organization, and all proceeds from reprints go to the Friends. Annual funding to the Library by the Friends supplies books and other materials, provides programs, and contributes to many other Library services that could not be otherwise offered to the community without their generosity. The online Photo Archive project was funded by the Friends of the Library in 2006.
The Photo Archives are intended for personal research, scholarly and educational purposes. Identification and history of each photo are provided by the Friends of the Library. The El Segundo Public Library and The Friends of the El Segundo Public Library assume no responsibility for the improper use of any image from the Photo Archives.
Photographic quality prints may be ordered from the Library.
