El Segundo Power Set to Demolish Units 1 and 2 Stacks
The power station owner, El Segundo Power LLC, has initiated the removal of Units 1 and 2 stacks at the El Segundo Generating Station. This project entails a "top down" removal of the two northern-most stacks using hand-held equipment. The work is being conducted during normal business hours (Monday through Friday 7:30 AM to 6 PM). Demolition got underway the last week of November and is expected to be completed by early February.
El Segundo Power maintains a 24-hour "hotline" 1-888-312-0881 for the public to ask any questions or express any noise-related concerns that may arise during the El Segundo Power Redevelopment Project.
El Segundo Power has submitted to the California Energy Commission a petition to amend their current permit for CEC’s previously approved El Segundo Power Redevelopment Project (Docket Number 00-AFC-14C); which allowed for the replacement of Units 1 and 2 with a 630-megawatt combined-cycle power facility. The petition requests modifications to the plant’s design to utilize Rapid Response Combined Cycle technology (which includes air cooling as opposed to once-through ocean water cooling) and method of delivery of oversized equipment to include delivery by barge over El Segundo Beach. A public workshop conducted by the California Energy Commission on the requested project amendment will be held in January 2008.
