The City of El Segundo has been recognized with an Honorable Mention
Many people are not aware that the energy required to pump water from the north and over the Tehachapi Mountains into Southern California is nearly 3,200 kWh per acre foot. Recycling water locally requires closer to 900 kWh per acre foot, resulting in an energy savings of about 2,500 kWh per acre foot. The City made a commitment to purchase recycled water from Metropolitan Water District’s recycling facility in El Segundo for irrigation and other non-potable needs. Today over 50% of the water used by the City is recycled, and we effectively saved over 22,000,000 kWh of electricity over the period July 1 2007 through June 30, 2008.
