Testing is scheduled for
Saturday, July 10th, 2010 

Police Officer Trainee applications are accepted on a continuous basis with the City of El Segundo Human Resources Department, 350 Main Street, El Segundo, California, 90245, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. For job brochure and application call the City 24 hour job hotline at (310) 524-2378, or click here. A photo I.D. is required at the time of testing. Facsimiles of required application are not accepted. Only candidates meeting the minimum qualifications, appear to be the most qualified and meet the department's particular needs will be invited into the examination process. Testing is conducted periodically when sufficient qualified applications are received and/or at the need of the department. Candidates are notified by mail as to exact test dates, times and locations. Any candidate accepted for testing and who fails to appear, or fails any part of the testing process, must wait 6 months to reapply. The examination process and/or procedures may be modified, altered or revoked without prior notification. Testing may consist of the following phases, but not necessarily in the order presented:

  1. Written Test - Pass/Fail
    Designed to evaluate the candidates' reading comprehension, report writing & observation skills as determined by P.O.S.T. guidelines.
  2. Physical Abilities Exercise - Pass/Fail
    Designed to evaluate the physical agility and fitness of candidates as determined by P.O.S.T. guidelines.
  3. Oral Interview - 100%
    Comprised of El Segundo Police Department sworn personnel, it is designed to evaluate candidates' background, training, experience and motivation.

Candidates must pass each test phase in order to continue in the testing process. Successful candidates names are placed on an eligibility list in rank score order. Candidates names will be retained on the eligibility list for a period of (1) year. Lists will be merged regardless of date when originally placed on hiring list. All employment offers are conditional and based on candidate's successful completion of a thorough background, reference, and police record investigation, polygraph, psychological evaluation and a medical examination (includes drug and alcohol screen) which are paid by the city. A loyalty oath is also required.

Candidates selected from the eligibility list who have not attended a Police Academy will be required to successfully attend a California P.O.S.T. Certified Police Academy as a condition of employment. The Chief of Police shall determine the specific Police Academy for attendance. All new hires must pass a 12 month probationary period to attain permanent status as a sworn Police Officer with the City of El Segundo.
