Lateral Police Officer

The El Segundo Police Department has an innovative benefit package for Lateral Entry Police Officers. Our Lateral Bonus Program includes a $3,000.00 transfer bonus; allows, with verification, carry over of up to 960 hours of previously earned sick leave; allows placement within the salary range based upon years of previous law enforcement experience, and provides for a higher vacation leave accrual rate based upon total years of sworn law enforcement experience.

Applications accepted on a continuous basis. City applications and a copy of a California Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate required at time of filing of application. (P.O.S.T. waivers of the academy are not accepted for out of state lateral applicants; must have P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate.) Submission of a detailed resume along with any supplemental material is strongly encouraged. Facsimiles of required application are not accepted. Only applicants meeting the city's minimum qualifications, appear most qualified, and meet the El Segundo Police Department's particular needs will be invited to the examination process. The process will consist of a written exercise (pass/fail) and interview (weighted 100%). Testing is designed to evaluate reading comprehension and report writing skills, candidate's background, training, experience, and motivation for the position. A minimum passing score of 70% required for placement on eligibility list for hiring consideration. Names will be placed on the eligibility list in rank score order and may be merged with those of all other valid Lateral Entry Police Officer eligibility lists.

Candiates' names will be retained on the eligibility list for a period of (1) year. All employment offers are conditional and based on a candidate's successful completion of a thorough background, reference, and police record investigation, polygraph, psychological evaluation, and a medical examination (includes drug and alcohol screen) which are paid by the City. A Loyalty Oath is required.

Successful completion of a (1) one year probationary period will be required to attain permanent status as a Police Officer with the City of El Segundo.
