Bill AB 1216 Passes Natural Resources Committee in 8-3 Vote
On Monday, April 24, 2023, at their assembly hearing, the Natural Resources Committee heard Al Muratsuchi's bill AB 1216, which would require the Hyperion Wastewater Treatment Plant to test the air quality at their fence line for nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in addition to the hydrogen sulfide (H2S) they currently monitor.
Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi introduced the bill, and Mayor Pro Tem Chris Pimentel and Councilmember Ryan Baldino, joined by City Manager Darrell George, provided testimony on the assembly floor at the State Capitol in Sacramento. There was only one opposition to the bill made by the California Association of Sanitation Agencies (CASA). The Natural Resources Committee passed the bill with a vote of eight to three.
